Private Pilot Licence (PPL) Complete Guide
A Private Pilot Licence (PPL) is the ideal starting point for anyone who dreams of flying an aircraft for recreation, personal travel, adventure, or as the first step towards a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). Whether you simply wish to enjoy flying on weekends or plan to become an airline pilot in the future, a PPL provides the essential knowledge and flying experience to build confidence in the cockpit.
📘 1. PPL General Information & Eligibility
Before starting your flying training, it is important to understand the basic requirements laid down by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Basic Eligibility
✔ Minimum Age: 17 Years
✔ Educational Qualification: 10th Pass (or equivalent)
✔ Valid DGCA Class 2 Medical Certificate
✔ Pass the DGCA PPL Theory Examinations
✔ Successfully complete flying training and the final Skill Test
The DGCA also requires applicants to complete a minimum of 40 hours of flying, including solo and cross-country flying, before the licence can be issued.
Why Start with a Class 2 Medical?
The DGCA Class 2 Medical is the first official step towards becoming a pilot. It confirms that you meet the required medical standards to begin flight training. Most students obtain their Class 2 Medical before joining a flying club, allowing them to start training without unnecessary delays. If you later decide to pursue a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), you can upgrade to a Class 1 Medical.
Class 2 It is the first official medical clearance required for students pursuing a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). The examination ensures that you are medically fit to safely operate an aircraft.
The medical is conducted only by DGCA-approved Class 2 Medical Examiners. During the examination, the doctor checks your general health, vision (with or without spectacles), colour vision, hearing (audiometry), blood pressure, height, weight, medical history, and other basic physical standards. You may also be asked to undergo investigations such as blood and urine tests, ECG, chest X-ray, or other tests depending on your age and medical history.
Once the examination and required investigations are completed, the reports are submitted to DGCA for assessment. After approval, you receive your Class 2 Medical Assessment, which allows you to begin flying training.

🛩️ 3. Flying Training & Expert Guidance
Passing the theory examinations is only one part of your journey. The real excitement begins when you step into the cockpit and start flying.
Selecting the right flying club can make a significant difference in your overall experience, training duration, and expenses. Some students prefer full-time fast-track training, while others choose weekend flying to balance their studies or job. The right choice depends on your budget, location, aircraft availability, and future career plans.
Once you begin flying, you’ll train with a DGCA-approved Flying Training Organisation (FTO). To qualify for a PPL, you must complete at least 40 hours of flying, including 10 hours of solo flying, 5 hours of solo cross-country flying, and successfully pass the DGCA skill test conducted by an examiner.
Every student’s situation is different. Some prefer to complete training quickly by flying almost every day, while others enjoy learning over weekends or holidays. The right flying club depends on factors such as aircraft availability, instructor strength, weather, budget, and your long-term aviation goals.
At Pilot18, we help students choose the most suitable flying school anywhere in India. We can guide you on training costs, expected duration, accommodation, and whether a fast-track or weekend training plan is better for you.
