The aviation industry is entering one of its strongest growth phases in history. With Indian airlines expanding aggressively and global demand for commercial pilots rising, 2026 is an excellent year to begin your pilot training journey.
At Pilot18, we have trained over 3,500+ pilots, and our students from the 2022 batches are now flying with leading airlines across India and abroad. If you are planning to become a professional pilot, this comprehensive guide will help you understand the qualifications, medicals, licenses, training structure, costs, duration, and career scope.
Why 2026 Is the Right Time to Start Pilot Training
Indian aviation is growing at record speed. Airlines such as Air India (Boeing & Airbus), IndiGo (Airbus), Akasa Air (Boeing) have placed massive aircraft orders. Thousands of new aircraft are expected to join fleets in the coming years. Each aircraft should have 16-20 pilots to make them fly everyday. Additionally, many experienced Indian pilots are moving to foreign carriers for higher salary packages, creating even more opportunities for fresh Commercial Pilot License (CPL) holders.
The result? High demand, strong career growth, and global mobility.

Instrument & Additional Ratings
To enhance employability, pilots complete additional ratings:
-
Instrument Rating (IR) – Fly in low visibility using instruments
-
Multi Engine Rating (MER) – Required for airline operations
-
AFI Rating – Assistant Flight Instructor
-
FI Rating – Flight Instructor
-
CFI Rating – Chief Flight Instructor
Instructor ratings are excellent career options for hour building and stable income.
Type Rating – Aircraft Specific Training
After CPL, pilots undergo Type Rating on a specific aircraft, which they are about to fly, for a particular airline. For example, Indigo airlines operate mostly Airbus A320 aircraft. So, a CPL holder will be required to get type rating of that aircraft, to enable him to fly that family of aircraft. Sometimes airlines require Non-Type Rated CPL holders and sometimes Type Rated pilots. Those who are Non Type Rated will be asked to do type rating at their own expenses within a stipulated timeframe to be inducted towards the airline as junior first officer or first officer, technically called a Co-Pilot.
